FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

DOES THERAPY WORK?

As part of my training, I had weekly psychotherapy sessions for three years. Personally speaking I experienced a lot of positive changes in my inner world which made relationships and life more fulfilling. But don't just take my word for it. Taken from the UKCP website:

"The first major meta-analysis of psychotherapy outcomes included almost 400 studies and found that the outcomes of those receiving psychotherapy were far superior to those who were not (Smith and Glass, 1977).  These findings have consistently been supported by hundreds of subsequent meta-analyses demonstrating the clear clinical benefits of psychotherapy (Wampold and Imel, 2015).

Further research has demonstrated that psychotherapy is not only effective in addressing most mental health issues, but is also at least as effective as medication in doing so (Hollon et al, 2006; Cuipers et al, 2013)."

SO WHY DOES IT WORK?

The million dollar question. Different therapists would say different things depending on their training. It is hard to say exactly as it works in different ways for different people. Some therapies are more suited for certain issues but there is a growing body of research that is reaching consensus that is the strength of the relationship between the client and therapist which has the biggest impact on the effectiveness of therapy.

HOW LONG DOES A SESSION LAST?

Sessions last 50 minutes from the agreed start time. If sessions start later due to client being later then they will still finish at the agreed time.

HOW OFTEN DO I COME TO SESSIONS?

Clients usually attend sessions once per week.

CAN I RESCHEDULE MY APPOINTMENT?

When done more than 48 hours to your booked session then cancellations can be made online. Please note that it needs to be done 48hrs before the agreed session time otherwise the session will be charged for in full.

IS THERE PARKING NEARBY?

There is a multi-storey NCP car park very close as well as parking at two nearby supermarkets, Asda and Morrisons.

IS EVERYTHING I SAY CONFIDENTIAL?

Your sessions are confidential however there are exceptions to this which are:

I am concerned for your safety or the safety of others due to your behaviour.

You disclose any children or vulnerable adults are/have been at risk of being abused.

A court subpoena for admission of evidence.

Offences relating to terrorism or money laundering.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY?

There is an overlap between counselling and psychotherapy as well as some unique differences. In Counselling, clients are more likely to need help with a specific difficulty, current problem or surface issue, e.g. a bereavement or a difficulty at work. Psychotherapy is more likely to involve more deep-rooted difficulties that affects a client’s life, e.g. child abuse or trauma. A psychotherapist or counsellor however might help with either type of issue.

DO WE HAVE TO ALWAYS LOOK AT MY PAST?

I have worked with clients who felt they needed to really re-experience their past to move forward..I have also worked with clients who felt this had been done enough and wanted to look at what they could do now and in the future to work through their mental health issues..
